Slept well, got up early and packed up looking forward to heading north on the Cassiar Highway.
Was ready to leave but the bike wouldn't start. Checked spark at the plugs. Then noticed some drool coming from the airbox. Turned out the carb was flooding. I'd left the gas tank petcock open over night which exacerbated the problem. I drained a full pint of gas from the airbox.
I spent most of Saturday cleaning up the mess and mucking about with the carb's float. After a few experiments was confident that it wouldn't automatically start flooding again. Left the carb out and the airbox open overnight to dry.
Today put everything back together with a fresh air filter and the engine started right up.
Tomorrow the plan is to go into Stewart and change the oil since it may be contaminated with gas (everything is closed on Sunday so I couldn't get any oil today). Then I'll leave my luggage at the hotel there and head back over to Hyder. It looks like the weather will be decent so I want to ride up to Salmon Glacier. This should be a good test of the tires that are on the bike now.
Yesterday and today walked into Stewart for meals. It's about a half hour each way. Lots of time to look at the town and the mountains and snap some pictures.

At least half the houses in Stewart follow this pattern.. That's a metal roof. |

Port area between Stewart and Hyder. This is (I think) the beginning of the Portland Canal that runs some 70 miles to more open water. Ocean going ships dock here. |
