Underway again around 10 am
Topped up the tank before leaving the camp ground.
Route:
North on CA-139 to Termo Grasshopper Road* which runs east about 12 miles to US-395.
North on US-395.
Fuel stop in Alturas, CA.
Lunch in a Chinese restaurant in Lakeview, CA.
Fuel stop in Hines, OR (just before Burns, OR)
At Hines took Hines Logging Road north which turns into a Forest Service Road. After about 23 miles a narrow road branches off for another 10 miles to a dirt road to Emigrant Campground . This is a remote government campground ($8/night, $4 with senior pass).
I'm the only person here. Hope no yahoos in pickup trucks show up late (there's plenty of trash evidence of such).

*"Termo Grasshopper" is not as fanciful as it sounds. The area is called Grasshopper District (a Forest Service district?? I will have to check).  Termo is the "town" at the other end of the road.  "Town" in quotes because all I saw were a couple of out buildings and a sign announcing "Termo, population 26." Not sure where the 26 live.

Emigrant Campground is a very pretty, very remote spot.  I'll describe it further in Commentary.

Essentials for a feeling of being "on the road" are 2 lanes stretching to the horizon and a lonely set of telephone poles:
